Why Card Slingers Are a Game-Changer for TCG Sellers

If you sell trading cards, the bottleneck isn't finding stock or picking a marketplace. It's getting through the pile fast enough to keep up with it. That's the exact problem a card slinger solves.

A card slinger is a small 3D-printed tray that positions cards under your phone camera automatically, so a scanning app can read them one after another without you holding each card up by hand. It sounds like a small thing. In practice, it's one of the biggest time-savers you can add to a card business for almost no money.

I designed and printed my own, and it's been running my scanning station for months. I'm bringing it into the shop shortly — this post is the why, before that happens.

What a card slinger actually does

Instead of picking up a card, angling it at the camera, waiting for a read and putting it down again, you drop cards into a funnel and they land in the scan zone already positioned. Your hands stay free to keep feeding cards instead of repositioning the same one over and over.

It's completely passive — no electronics, no app of its own, nothing to charge or pair. It sits under your phone and does one job well: get the card in front of the camera the same way, every single time.

Why it's worth having one

The appeal isn't the tray. It's what consistent, hands-free scanning does to the rest of your workflow.

• Fewer misreads. A card that lands in the same spot under the same light scans cleanly first time instead of third.
• Real speed. Not fiddling with each card individually adds up quickly once you're a few hundred cards into a sitting.
• Almost no cost. A few hours of print time and a small amount of filament. There's no expensive equipment involved.
• Nothing to maintain. A static print with no moving parts doesn't wear out or jam the way a mechanical feeder does.

None of this replaces a good scanning app — the app still does the actual card recognition. What the slinger fixes is everything around the scan: the fumbling, the repositioning, the inconsistent angles that make a perfectly good scanner misread a card.

Why I designed my own

There are free tray designs floating around the maker communities and they're a solid starting point. I ended up drawing my own because I wanted something dialled in for exactly how I sort and store, and I've been printing and iterating on it since.

It's held up across the apps I actually use day to day — consistent reads, no jamming, no babysitting it mid-session. Which scanning apps I pair it with is really its own topic, so I'll cover that separately.

Between designing it, printing it and running real inventory through it for months, it's had a lot more testing than a one-off print usually gets. That's why I'm comfortable putting it in front of other sellers.

Do I need to 3D print it myself?
Not for much longer — mine's on its way to the shop. Until then, free designs exist if you want to print your own.

Does it work for any TCG, or just one?
The tray doesn't care what game is on the card, it just positions it for the camera. What matters is whether your scanning app recognises the game you're scanning.

Do I still need a scanning app?
Yes. The slinger handles positioning, not recognition. You still need an app doing the actual card identification — more on which ones I use in an upcoming post.

Is it worth it if I only sell a small volume?
It costs very little to own, so even at low volume it removes the annoying part of scanning. The time saved just grows the more you sort.

Will it fit my phone?
